Dear friends, colleagues and supporters,
I'm pleased to announce that CODE has been appointed by the Canadian Government to undertake the delivery of an extensive teacher education reform program in Mozambique. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of primary education on a national basis.
The $18M project entitled BETTER (Better Education through Teacher Training for Empowerment and Results), will be implemented in four of Mozambique's 12 provinces over a seven year period, together with the Mozambican Ministry of Education and Human Development, and CODE's national partner Associação Progresso, a two-time winner of the UNESCO International Literacy Prize.
CODE and Progresso have worked successfully together in the Mozambican education sector for over 25 years, in a partnership that has generated millions of locally published books and has trained thousands of teachers for the public school system, principally in the far rural north.
Under BETTER, CODE and Progresso will work with provincial teacher colleges (Instituto de Formação de Professores - IFPs) in four provinces to help improve the quality of teacher preparation and instructional practices, with a particular focus on the teaching of reading and writing. The impact of these improvements will most immediately be felt at the 100 primary schools where student-teachers conduct their practicums, and from there to the many schools where the new teachers are appointed. Eventually, the Government of Mozambique will apply the lessons learned nation-wide.
