Implemented by CODE and Associação Progresso in eight primary schools in Boane District, Maputo Province, K2A focuses on one of the most important factors influencing student learning: teachers. Through professional development, coaching, mentoring, access to literacy resources, and community engagement, the project supports educators throughout their professional journey while helping children develop stronger foundational literacy skills.

K2A builds on a strong foundation established through BETTER (Better Education through Teacher Training and Empowerment for Results). Over nearly a decade, BETTER worked with teacher training institutes, practicum schools, and government partners to strengthen pre-service teacher education, improve mentoring and supervision systems, and develop nationally approved teaching resources that continue to be used across Mozambique today.

Lessons learned through BETTER reinforced the importance of supporting teachers throughout their professional journey. Building on this lesson, K2A supports both the transition from training to classroom practice and the continued professional growth of teachers already working in schools.

Professional development sits at the heart of the project. Teachers will participate in ongoing learning opportunities focused on literacy instruction, student-centred teaching, and gender-responsive approaches to education. Through coaching, mentoring, and peer-learning networks, educators will be supported to apply new knowledge in their classrooms and continuously strengthen their teaching practice. K2A also works with education stakeholders responsible for teacher development and support, helping reinforce the systems that enable teachers to continue learning throughout their careers.

Strong literacy outcomes require both skilled educators and access to quality learning resources. K2A will help create literacy-rich learning environments by providing books and supplementary materials that support reading instruction and encourage students to engage with reading every day. Classroom libraries and reading spaces will provide opportunities for children to build confidence and develop a lifelong love of learning.

The project also recognizes that children learn best when schools and communities work together. Parents, caregivers, community leaders, school councils, and local education stakeholders all have a role to play in supporting children's learning. Through community engagement activities and strengthened school governance structures, K2A encourages collaboration that reinforces literacy and learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Working alongside government stakeholders and education partners, K2A also strengthens mentoring systems, data-informed decision-making, and local planning processes that support teachers and schools. By reinforcing existing structures and relationships rather than creating parallel systems, the project aims to contribute to sustainable improvements that continue beyond the life of the initiative.

"Before BETTER, teaching was just a job. Now, it is a mission. We are shaping the future."
