In 2012, CODE began a new multi-year program in Ethiopia. It is based on our comprehensive literacy model called Reading CODE which has two essential elements: interesting books that are relevant to the readers; and meaningful engagement with these books through high quality teaching. A key component of Reading Ethiopia is the establishment of new community libraries or reading rooms in several regions of Ethiopia. These community libraries will provide students, teachers and other members of the local community with access to a wide variety of high quality books and other reading materials in both English and local languages. CODE’s local partner, CODE-Ethiopia provides support to these community libraries for the purchase of local language and English books, librarian and management committee training, as well as the purchase of furniture, book shelves, tables, chairs, and workshop materials.
The Fitche community library is located in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. It is located in an old villa made of wood and mud.
