There are now many thousands of books in the countries where CODE works, and the wonderful thing is that we are leaving behind something concrete.”
Dr.Wendy Saul, CODE Board Member
More than half of children in low and middle-income countries cannot read proficiently by age 10. This is a learning crisis that CODE and our supporters are determined to help address.
We know from more than 60 years’ of experience that books are powerful tools in the fight against illiteracy – no matter where you live.
Your support helps us work with local authors, illustrators and publishers in sub-Saharan Africa to produce and deliver books to children determined to learn.
These books feature brightly coloured images and the stories cover a wide range of topics. Some come from fables and legends and others are fact-based. Some stories focus on math and science and many feature girls as the main characters to promote gender equality.
Your support can help us stack library and school shelves with colourful and engaging children’s books that are appropriate for different reading levels, written in languages that children understand, and that reflect their local realities.
We are delighted to share a few of our favourite children’s books that your gifts help us deliver to communities in Liberia and Sierra Leone. We hope that you will share them with the young global citizens in your life.
