Around the World Reading Guide

This guide offers techniques to reading Around the World in the Blink of an Eye as well as prompting questions to further the learning and reflection of students, using maps and atlases as teaching aids.

Lessons for Around the World

The following lessons use Around the World as a basis for exploring themes such as global art and perspective, the notion of a global community, and an understanding of how access to education may not be the same in different parts of the world. They are independent lessons which can also be used without having read Around the World.

Exploring Art From Around the World

This art lesson challenges students to choose an illustration from Around the World that they enjoyed and further research the artist who created it. Students will integrate their knowledge of the elements and principles of art to communicate their ideas and creatively develop an advertisement for the artist’s work.

Grades: 4 and 5

Using Different Artistic Tools

Building off of their knowledge of the elements and principles of art, students will apply these skills using a variety of art supplies in this lesson as they explore perspective.

Around Our Class in a Day

Students collaborate to create a book depicting each hour of the day, in their own classroom. Replicating the example in Around the World, students will investigate the concept of perspective and how classrooms may differ around the world.

My Family Traditions

Students will reflect on personal traditions and using language, visual arts, or both, they will share the value of their tradition with their classmates. Students explore the concept of interrelationships and how communities are brought together through traditions.

Literacy Around the World

Using the statistics provided, students will apply their knowledge of data management to create graphs, comparing literacy rates from different parts of the world. This serves as a basis for discussion about the importance of education and what social, economic, and geographic factors can influence education.

Exploring Global Literacy

The following two lessons use student research to explore the connections between a country’s education and literacy rate and other social, economic and environmental factors.

Global Literacy

Using CODE’s website, students will research key factors in an African country and compare them to Canada, exploring how social, economic and environmental issues can influence and affect literacy in different parts of the world. Students will learn that educational opportunities are not the same in all parts of the world by unpacking the social studies concept of cause and consequence.

Grades: 5 and 6

Global Literacy

Students are challenged to research a variety of information on countries from different continents. Using this as a basis, they will explore how the education system is impacted by social, economic and environmental factors – which have lasting impacts on a country’s literacy rate. Students will use the concept of cause and consequence to communicate their understanding.
